SCOTT NICHOLLS has vowed “there is life in the old dog” as he targets an incredible EIGHTH British title.

The Oxford star lines up for his 29th season in the sport and is still determined to be a big-hitter.

Nicholls, 44, is the most decorated rider in the history of the British Championship and admits he would love to add yet another night of glory at the National Speedway Stadium.

At the BSN press day on Saturday, he revealed: “There’s definitely life in the old dog yet. I wouldn’t turn up if I didn’t have ambitions and desires to win the British title again.

“Let’s face it, Belle Vue is a tough place for me to turn up and win. I’m one of the bigger riders and heavier.

“Dan Bewley is exceptionally quick but he’s still beatable. If it was moved away from Belle Vue I think I’d have a better chance of pushing for an eighth title.

“Nonetheless it comes down to that one race in the final and anything can happen. With a decent bit of kit under me I think I can still do the job.

“I had a shocker last year but everyone who turns up wants to win. An eighth title would be mega before I hang the boots up. The desire is still there.”

Nicholls is part of a potent looking Oxford spearhead with Sam Masters and Lewis Kerr.

He also revealed he still has goals in the Cab Direct Championship, adding: “Every year March comes round quicker but it’s exciting times. So yes I’m 29 years in and still enjoying it.

“You do change over the years, of course I’m still enthusiastic and I’ve got more of a laidback approach.

“But nonetheless there’s still butterflies and the nerves having not sat on a bike all winter. What motivates me? I have bills to pay!

“I’m not at my best, I’ve had my best years. But you still want to be the best you can be at that point in your life. I’ve still got goals, I want to do the best job I can.

“I don’t have specific figures I’m aiming for like some people have. Some want to win a British Championship or be a No.1. I still want to push for all those things, but the goalposts move accordingly.

“I still feel I have a lot to offer, I’m still motivated. I also want to be a decent role model as well. I get enjoyment out of helping the young boys along the way.

“Hopefully I can share some of my experience of the mistakes I’ve made and maybe stop the younger riders from doing the same things.”
