HOPES of speedway returning to the Swindon area have been boosted…thanks to an amazing response from fans.

Swindon Motorsports Limited have brought in Real Estate company Savills to lead the assessment of potential sites for a new motorsports stadium in the Wiltshire area after the end of racing at Blunsdon.

Scores of Robins fans have responded to SML director and Swindon promoter Terry Russell’s appeal for supporters to pass on information on what they believe could be potential areas for the new development.

Now it is up to Savills plc, one of the world’s leading estate agents, to take the project another step forward.

Russell told website Swindonlink.com: “We have been blown away by the response we have received from Swindon speedway fans and members of the Swindon community at large.

“As a result we have received many prospective sites to consider. We are delighted to see positive progress being made and look forward to moving into the next phase of the site identification.

“Savills’ knowledge and expertise will be a vital asset as we continue to move forward in the site identification process, and we look forward to working with them over the coming months.”

A spokesperson for Savills added: “There are several sites already under consideration. We will be working closely with Swindon Motorsports Ltd over coming months to assess appropriate sites, with the aim of identifying a suitable site in the not too distant future.”

There has been no racing at the Abbey Stadium since Swindon were crowned Premiership champions at the end of 2019.

Covid-19 and the planned redevelopment of the venue saw the club’s top[flight licence put on ice but it was formally announced last year that speedway will not be returning to the current site because of its unviability.
