POOLE will have a new reserve pairing when they take on Scunthorpe in their Cab Direct Championship opener later this week.

Swindon-born Darryl Ritchings – who resumed his racing career this summer after and eight-year lay-off  – replaces Matt Marson on Wednesday night.

The 30-year-old, who is racing for Oxford Chargers in the National Development League and National Trophy Birmingham Bulls this summer, is the latest to fill the number seven race jacket until teenage sensation William Cairns reaches his 16th birthday on June 29.

Marson initially accepted the challenge but managed only two points from 12 rides in the opening four meetings and the home defeat at the hands of Oxford in the BSN Series proved to be his last appearance as a Pirate.

Poole promoter Dan Ford said: “Matt found it tough at Championship level and we feel it is important to strengthen our competitiveness at reserve. Darryl brings valuable experience, and we believe that can really benefit the team.

“We have nine meetings before Will Cairns becomes eligible and Darryl fully understands the role and is eager to make the most of this opportunity.

“His form in the third tier has been very encouraging so we are hopeful he can carry that confidence into the Championship over the coming weeks.”

Ritchings himself cannot wait to pull on a Poole race jacket.

“I am absolutely buzzing to be a Pirate, even if it is on a short-term basis,” he said.

“The club has such history. I am going to grab this opportunity with both hands.

“I'm an out-and-out racer so I will give it 110% in every race. I can’t wait to get going on Wednesday.”
