SCOTT NICHOLLS insists there is “no issue” despite undergoing a pre-season operation on his left knee.

The Oxford Cheetahs’ captain went under the knife on a tear to the meniscus – a part of the cartilage that facilitates movement. But Nicholls, 45, vowed he is not worried about any possible delay to his campaign starting in just over a month.

He told Speedway Star: “It is not the ideal time. I did consider waiting until the end of the year but I figured that if it started to get worse, then I might be in a bit of a predicament.

“It is all pretty straightforward, an in-and-out job, but it just means that I will have to rest for a couple of weeks, which is not ideal.

“That said, it is better that I have a good knee and don’t feel restricted in any way.

“I don’t see it as an issue at all. I can still do everything that I need to now, it is just that little niggle that is more of a problem with running, when my knee is fully bent at full tilt. It is more of an irritation than a problem.

“I had a scan and they spotted a tear that they advised me to tidy up to prevent it from getting worse. Prevention is better than cure, so I’m taking the opportunity to get it cleaned up before the season starts.”

In the meantime, build-up continues their BSN Series season kick off at Poole on Good Friday before Cheetahs welcome Pirates for the reverse fixture on Wednesday, April 3.

Nicholls added: “I’m looking forward to it. There is still a little bit to do on the bikes, not loads, I am always ticking over and keeping myself busy, doing those bits, going out on my bike and heading to the gym.

“I wouldn’t ever claim to be the fittest in the world but I feel like I’m doing okay for an old bloke. I am looking forward to getting back out there and racing again.

“It is always exciting to be back at Oxford, a great club with a great fan base, and it is a whole different look this time. With the club running in each of the three leagues, it only adds to that excitement.”
