GINO MANZARES admits he is gunning for a place in the American Speedway of Nations team ahead of tonight’s test match.

The colourful former Scunthorpe star is aiming to join Luke Becker in the Stars and Stripes in Manchester in July.

Manzares, 30, will captain his country in the fascinating clash with the Rest of the World at the Kern Raceway (live on BSN tonight, 8.45pm).

He told the Humans of Speedway: “Luke is leading the charge and we are all fighting for the opportunity to join him.

“This meeting is going to be a good look for everyone to see where we are all at performance-wise.

“It’s a dream come true to be captain and I’ve got to thank Luke and Steve Evans for giving me the opportunity.

“I remember being 16 and first lining up for Team USA in Lonigo. From that moment it’s been a life dream to race for my country.

“I always said one day I’d love to captain the team and here we are. I’m very honoured and happy.”

Both teams are packed with talent and up and coming stars. But Manzares admits the clashes of old Coventry team-mates Billy Janniro and Chris Harris should be epic.

He added: “It’s going to be a big eye opener for the fans. I think it’s going to be an action-packed night.

“They have guys on their team that will chase the dirt and they’ll run you off the line.

“Bomber is a legend. I’m more excited to see Bomber and Billy J and see them ride together. It’s going to be awesome.”

Manzares hasn’t raced in the UK since 2018 but is hoping to return for the SON and a possible team place.

He said: “I really chase those butterfly feelings. That’s why the only sports I’ve chased are speedway and fighting.

“To be honest the biggest challenge is getting the right team around me who believe in me. Let’s be honest, I made a lot of mistakes when I was younger!

“I think the only thing holding me back from England is obviously my past. Hey I was young and dumb. I learned my lesson.

“I’m just hoping that a promoter does see that not only have I got better, that I’m also a better human. They just need to see the difference.

“If I get the chance to race in the Speedway of Nations, everyone will see what I’m talking about.”
