WORKINGTON’S rollercoaster of a season continues in front of the BSN cameras this evening as they bid to extend their unbeaten start to the 2025 Cab Direct Championship.
Bad weather and a licence suspension by the BSPL means the Comets have only raced twice in the league but comprehensive home victories over Plymouth and Poole mean they approach the visit of Scunthorpe high on confidence.
Moreso having already beaten the Scorpions at the GT Tyres Arena this season, by four points back in May’s BSN Series clash.
But Workington will have to do it without one of the heroes of last week’s shock thumping of the Pirates.
Antti Vuolas, who scored 11 points, is in Latvia racing for Finland in the European Pairs Championship which means the Comets operate rider-replacement.
All his team-mates: in-form Australian Tate Zischke and his fellow countrymen Jye Etheridge, Fraser Bowes, Troy Batchelor, Jacob Hook and lone Englishman Vinnie Foord are available to take Vuolas’ rides.
The Scorpions will be hoping to take advantage of the Finn’s absence and also the track knowledge of Luke Harrison who was missing from the BSN Series defeat in Cumbria racing in the SGP2 qualifiers.
Harrison made his full-time debut as a 16-year-old in the Comets’ National Development League side which brought speedway to the purpose-built arena in 2023, his performances earning a string of guest appearances with Redcar in the Championship before switching to his home-town track the following season.
Workington boss James Denham said: “Having rider replacement at number two lets us mix things up in certain heats.
“Scunthorpe gave us a good run for our money in May but that was our first meeting of the season and we were still shaking off the cobwebs. Since then, we’ve had some really solid results, especially last weekend’s win over Poole, which gave the boys a real boost and belief, and reminded us what we’re capable of.
“Everyone needs to dig in and keep last places to a minimum because, like us, Scunthorpe have got strength right through their team.”
The meeting, which begins at 6pm is included in the Total Season and Championship season passes or can be bought on a pay-to-view basis here Coverage begins at 5.30pm
