BENJAMIN BASSO has kicked off his winter…by distilling a new RUM for his team!

The swashbuckling Dane revealed that he is creating his own liquor called The Basso Racing Rum.

Basso, 22, came up with the plan at one of his many sponsor events in Denmark.

He said: “About a month ago I had a sponsor event which was at a rum tasting.

“On that day we tasted a lot of different types of rum and then with my sponsors we decided that we should make a rum and which one it should be.

“I felt like that was a great thing, a good gimmick and it’s something very different.

“I never drink alcohol during the season. Once it is off season I like to have a little rum or two.

“It will be called The Basso Racing Rum and that will be the actual label on the bottle.

“I have to thank Martin Kaszubinska Pedersen at Dansk Erhvervsassurance for all his backing and help in setting this up because it’s pretty awesome.

“After three months we are going to have a couple of bottles to see how it progresses. Then they should be ready after six or eight months.”

The irony certainly wasn’t lost on Basso that his UK career began with the Pirates. Of course, the original sea robbers were famous for rum being their favourite tipple!

He added: “It’s funny that I started my UK career with the Poole Pirates and then won the league title there again just a few weeks ago. Maybe I should also one day race for Piraterna in Sweden!

“My sponsor events will maybe always be rum tastings during the close season.

“It’s always easier to negotiate with sponsors when they’ve had a few rums!”

Basso has already revealed he would not be returning to the Championship title winners Glasgow.

He remains tight-lipped on his teams for 2024 but will return to the UK in the Premiership.

He added: “I am riding in the Premiership in the UK which I have sorted but I can’t say just yet. I’m also in Poland and Fjelsted in Denmark

“It’s just about keeping fit now and it’s always important to keep your weight down to a limit.

“I like to stay in the right shape so it’s not too difficult to be ready for when the season starts again.

“To be honest, I’m pretty addicted to sport. It’s hard for me to go a whole day without doing any sport at all.

“I like the close season because I can be more consistent about my fitness instead of having to travel so much.”
